Visiting Cozumel

Cozumel's crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs make it a snorkeler's paradise, but beneath the surface lies a web of tourist traps and potential pitfalls that could turn your dream vacation into a costly disappointment. From inflated tour prices and equipment damage scams to overcrowded spots and questionable safety practices, I've experienced it all. In this guide, I'll share my hard-learned lessons about navigating Cozumel's snorkeling scene - from choosing the right west coast beaches for optimal conditions to avoiding common currency exchange tricks. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned snorkeler, I'll show you how to dodge the scams, stay safe, and make the most of your underwater adventure in this Mexican paradise.
Even if you have never been to Cozumel, you will probably know that it's a snorkel and scuba diver's paradise with all its beautiful reefs just off the shore. You can find the best snorkel spots straight from the beach, or you can book a tour with one of the many tour companies the island boasts. But this is where it becomes tricky. Because where do you find the most reputable tour company? And who can you trust? I'll put a few do's and don't in a list for you, tried and tested, so you don't have to fall for any scams and loose your hard-earned money for a disappointing experience.
Just to make this more fun, let's get to the Don'ts and the absolutely not's!
Don't accept any help from strangers when using an ATM. And I mean absolutely not! Scammers work in pairs or groups, and while one casually watches you put in your pin code, another will 'help you' with the transaction. They will make you believe that something went wrong and you have to 'close' your transaction or others can take your money. Do NOT fall for this scam, because they will take your card, your money, and before you know it, your well-deserved holiday turns into a nightmare. Never let your card leave your hands! Don't fall for sales agent trying to sell you apparent good deals around the ferry docks. Most of these tour agencies don't have the right documents and licenses in place, and you'll risk losing your money and the tour, leaving you disappointed at the very least. This is true both for Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. Buy your tickets from the ferry booth, or if you're booking a tour, book it online. Don't stay around the main shopping area near the ferry docks for too long. Although there are many shops there, shopping and food will be much cheaper when you get away from the tourist area. Don't get into a taxi before you know the price. Taxis will try to overcharge you all the time, and if you don't know the price upfront, you could be in for a surprise. The taxi stand near the ferry usually has accurate price lists, so check those before you travel in a taxi. Don't use regular sunscreen lotion and insect repellent. As the island is surrounded by a national park (the ocean), it's illegal and extremely harmful to wildlife to use toxic lotions, etc. Also, any oils will leave a layer on the surface of the water, making it harder for sunlight to penetrate, and the important seagrass can die because of it. Our turtles depend on it! Please use biodegradable sunscreen instead. And bring it with you, as it will be very expensive in Cozumel.
Now that we have those pesky don'ts out of the way, let's get to the Do's of Cozumel. It only sounds better, but there are still some warnings here. Keep them stored. Inside your brain preferable or keep this website handy on your phone. That way you will always be prepared.
Do check reputable travel review websites for reviews of experiences with tour companies. Do book with tour companies directly online, rather than from a booth near the ferry dock. Do check the (snorkel) equipment you're given, if you're not bringing your own. Take photos if you can. Do book with tour companies that leave from a point close to the ferry docks. If they don't, you can count on them being illegal companies, which can result in cancellations if caught. In that case, you won't see your money or any reefs... Do bring pesos rather than USD. There are numerous ATM's close to the ferry port, so getting pesos from a machine should be as easy as ABC. Do buy your ferry tickets from the ticket booth. Whether you're coming from Playa del Carmen, or staying in Cozumel and going to Playa del Carmen, don't let the sales people outside the ferry docks sway you with their 'good deals' and 'skip the line' talks. They barely ever are, and you will end up paying much more than you would have if you would have waited in line for 10 minutes. Do bring biodegradable sunscreen and if possible, also insect repellent. Everything else is illegal to use as it is extremely harmful to the coral and wildlife, and it will disturb growth.
Okay. So now that we have all the warnings out of the way, there are only a few things left to say here. These warnings aren't here to scare you. Cozumel, and all of the Riviera Maya is a truly magical place. But as the saying goes: Better safe than sorry.
Other than that, DO enjoy the island. It's beautiful and you will go home with everlasting memories. Hopefully we'll see you again soon!
